San Antonio 'Express-News' Shuffles Its Comics Lineup

Posted
By: E&P Staff The San Antonio (Texas) Express-News has made several changes in its comics section.

Public Editor Bob Richter reported that "Retro Geek," "The Other Coast," and "Family Tree" have been added; "Willy 'n Ethel," "Barney Google and Snuffy Smith," and "Tumbleweeds" are out (the last strip recently left syndication); "Curtis" is now Sunday-only; "The Amazing Spider-Man" now runs only on the paper's Web site; and "Dilbert" moved from the financial pages to the comics.

"The changes reflect results of recent E-N reader polls, which tells me if you have favorite comic strips, don't hesitate to tout them in future polling," Richter wrote.

Richter also related a story about how the Express-News' two predecessor papers dropped several comics in 1953, after which the rival San Antonio Light bought the strips. "Subscribers left en masse for the Light, which grabbed a circulation lead it held for the next 30 years," said the public editor.
