San Diego Alt-Paper Launches Real Estate Portal

Posted
By: E&P Staff The alternative weekly San Diego Reader launched a real estate portal Friday that targets a grown-up audience that's moved on from rental property.

"For over 30 years San Diegans have turned to the Reader for their roommate and rental needs. It makes perfect sense for us to assist them in finding their first house or condo," Reader Project Manager Barbara Christensen said in announcing the alliance with HouseRebate.com.

Users can access HouseRebates MLS listings through the alt-paper's site, www.sdreader.com.

HouseRebates.com also provides addresses, sales price comparisons, photos, and details such as square footage or number of baths. A link to Google maps includes a street view option enabling users to view streets, take virtual walks, and explore neighborhood amenities.

HouseRebate.com CEO Brian Yui said he founded the service in 1999 "after recognizing that one of the biggest discrepancies in the real estate industry was the distribution of commissions." His business philosophy was a natural fit with the Reader, he added.

"As an alternative newspaper, the Reader takes pride in its independence from the mainstream media," Yui said. "It is also a forum where ideas are exchanged, and buyers and sellers save money. This is a natural fit."
