By: E&P Staff The San Diego Union-Tribune has tapped Freedom Communications' vice president of interactive Jeff Light to serve as its next editor. Light will begin his new role March 8.

"Jeff has demonstrated success both in print and online journalism -- and he's passionate about it," Ed Moss, the U-T's president and publisher, said in a statement. "People have heard us talk about our entrepreneurial and innovative spirit; Jeff embodies this, with boundless energy, which will be critical as we continue to look for ways to offer more value to our readers with news and information that impacts their lives."

Light has been with Freedom Communications since 1993. Before being named the company's VP/interactive he was the deputy editor of The Orange County Register's Web site. He was also in charge of content and quality of the print product and 23 community newspapers. He was a member of the Register's Pulitzer Prize winning team in 1996 and managed investigative units that were Pulitzer finalists in 2004 and 2005.

"We need to have a Web-first model -- and we also need to continue to produce an excellent newspaper," Light said in a statement. "Our job is about connecting people and building community through information. That starts with the credibility, expertise and the creativity of our staff."

Light succeeds Karin Winner, who retried at the end of 2009.
