The San Francisco Chronicle’s SFGate today unveiled a new, redesigned website. The site provides a richer digital platform for readers to engage with the news and other stories delivered on SFGate, as well as with its advertisers. The key objectives of the redesign were to allow readers to more easily discover, engage with and share content; optimize the site for a wide range of devices; and integrate more storytelling elements to create a richer experience.

“The new SFGate has a bold and modern aesthetic that conveys the dynamic spirit of the City and the SFGate brand. The layout also has a much greater visual impact with the top news prominently displayed, larger photos and more video,” said Kristine Shine, president of The San Francisco Chronicle.  “Overall, the redesigned site gives us the platform to reimagine how we deliver stories and connect with the broader Bay Area community.”

The new site, designed by Hearst Newspapers’ digital product group, has a striking visual design with a homepage that features infinite scrolling, visually rich content and a news feed.  The article and blog pages display more media and storytelling elements such as photo galleries, videos, infographics and maps. In addition, readers can connect to their desired content more easily than before with faster load times and enhanced navigation and search functionality.

Other highlights of the redesign include:

•    A rebuilt photo-viewing experience enabling images to be as prominent as possible on every device.

•    Article and blog pages have a consistent layout, look and feel, and related links that tell more sides of the story.

•    An updated site navigation and a new site search tool to increase content discoverability.

•    A new native advertising platform and new sponsored content placement.

“The site will continuously evolve and improve as we add more content, voices and partnerships,” Shine said. “Our goal is to offer a best-in-class, innovative experience for our readers and brand partners.”

SFGate remains a free site for anyone looking to get purposeful, fast and immediate breaking news, or a quick taste of what is happening in San Francisco at any given moment — from local events to crime news to local sports team coverage. The San Francisco Chronicle’s other online site, SFChronicle.com, will maintain its classic design and continue to be a premium subscription destination, with in-depth analysis and commentary, investigative reporting and feature stories.
