By: E&P Staff The San Jose Mercury News has tapped Rachel Wilner to be its new sports editor. She will be the first woman ever to serve in that position at the paper.
Wilner, a 10-year veteran of the Mercury News, has held a variety of jobs in the paper's Sports department, including stints as design director, Sunday sports editor, assistant sports director and deputy editor.
"Those of us who have worked with Rachel know that this promotion is richly deserved," wrote Mercury News executive editor Susan Goldberg in a memo to staff Thursday. "She is a gifted editor and manager, and she is greatly respected by her colleagues in Sports and across the building. This move also puts Rachel into a select group: she is one of just a handful of female sports editors nationwide."
