Ohio's Sandusky Register also will print the Norwalk Reflector next month, beginning with the June 14 issue, Reflector Publisher Andy Prutsock reported to readers Wednesday. Staff had been notified on Monday.
Long owned by Sandusky Newspapers, both dailies will continue operating as separate publications, according to Prutsok.
The Reflector circulates almost 9,000 copies, while the Register circulates almost 24,000 copies -- both representing small but not negligible year-to-year increases in the ABC's March FAS-FAX report.
Prutsock said his paper's aging Goss Community has "severely limited" color capacity. "While our talented pressroom crew has gotten far more out of our presses than we could ever have expected or hoped for, we are at a point where some significant investment in our printing will be required, and it's the same with the Sandusky Register. It simply does not make sense to do so twice," he wrote. The register operates a two-around Goss Urbanite.
Though readers and advertisers will see little change at first, Prutsock said more color will be available and distribution may be a little earlier. Sandusky is less than 20 miles north of Norwalk, on Lake Erie.
Prutsock said Norwalk's pressroom and mailroom positions -- five full-time and nine part-time -- will be eliminated, and that the paper will work with the county's Department of Job and Family Services to help those affected.
Asking for patience, the publisher was straightforward with readers: "This is not going to be an easy transition for us," he wrote. "Work and distribution schedules will need to be altered, and I will eat my hat if there are no technical or mechanical glitches initially."
