Sarasota Paper Cuts 14 Jobs -- and Whole Section

Posted
By: E&P Staff An article in the The Herald-Tribune of Sarasota, Fla. reveals today that the paper is eliminating a stand-alone section on Sundays "and cutting another 14 positions in the face of a struggling advertising market."

"We are converting the Sunday Perspectives section to a two-page package in the A section that will have a robust tie-in to the Web," said Herald-Tribune Publisher Diane McFarlin in the article.

The change "is aimed both at saving on the costs of paper and making the package more interactive, to encourage online discussions with the community," the article relates. "To underscore the approach, Editorial Page Editor Tom Tryon's title is being changed to Herald-Tribune Group Opinion Editor.

"The layoffs at the media company were scattered through various departments, and included three positions in the Herald-Tribune's newsroom. Two of the positions were open, so only 12 people lost their jobs. The Herald-Tribune also is offering voluntary buyouts to eligible employees 50 years and older in its pressroom."
