By: The Savannah Morning News is celebrating its 160th anniversary.
The newspaper published its first edition on Jan. 15, 1850 -- almost 15 years before Gen. William T. Sherman and his Union troops arrived in December 1864 to occupy Savannah during the Civil War.
The Savannah paper cost just 2 cents when it was first published in 1850. Copies were produced with a printing press that used wooden type and had to be cranked by hand.
Michael Traynor, publisher of the Savannah Morning News, said that despite trying times for newspapers financially, he's optimistic about the Savannah paper's future.
