'Savannah Morning News' Former Reporter Sentenced for Attempted Robbery

By: A former Savannah newspaper reporter has been sentenced to eight years and eight months in prison for attempting to rob a bank last year with a sawed-off shotgun.

Donald Lowery had tried to rob a BankSouth branch in Savannah with the gun, 25 rounds of ammunition and two knives in September 2007, a few months after leaving his job at the Savannah Morning News.

A customer wrestled Lowery to the floor. No bank employees or customers were injured.

A federal judge sentenced 54-year-old Lowery on Thursday. He had pleaded guilty in June, telling a judge he had been having financial problems but never intended to hurt anyone. Lowery's wife testified that he has been diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver.
