By: E&P staff The St. Petersburg Times Scholarships have been renamed the Barnes Scholarships in honor of retiring Times Publishing Company Chairman and CEO Andrew Barnes. The first four Barnes Scholars were introduced at a luncheon Tuesday at the A La Carte Event Pavilion in Tampa.

The Barnes Scholarships are funded by the St. Petersburg Times Fund Inc., which has assisted students and working journalists with scholarships and fellowships for more than half a century.

Barnes, who will retire from the St. Petersburg Times on May 15, founded the scholarship program in 1999. Four students from the Tampa Bay area are selected to receive up to $15,000 per year for four years of college expenses. The program is aimed at students who show academic promise despite significant obstacles.

"In a world where success is more and more dependent on the very best education, it gives us great pride to be able to assist such talented young people," said Andrew Barnes, according to a press release. "The scholarships are a small payback for the wonderful support we have received over the decades."

The 2004 Barnes Scholars are Shakira Carter, Ashley Kuhn, Joshua Reed, and Jian Zheng.
