By: William Ralph Schultz, whose 37-year career as a Lancaster newsman included a long stint as editor of the Intelligencer Journal, has died. He was 83.
Schultz died Sunday of natural causes, the paper reported.
He began at Lancaster Newspapers Inc. in 1951, and was editor of the Intelligencer Journal from 1973 until his retirement in 1988.
Under his tenure, the paper's circulation climbed, the staff was expanded and Lifestyle and Happenings sections were added.
He and his wife, Jane H. Murphy Schultz, edited the Wyoming County News in Tunkhannock for a year before he joined the Intelligencer Journal as a reporter.
He was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School, Keystone Junior College and Penn State University and served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.
A memorial service will be held April 28 at Grandview United Methodist Church in Lancaster.
