SCRIPPS AGREES TO BUY THE GLEANER

The E.W. Scripps Co. said it agreed to buy The Gleaner in Hendersonville, Ky., from Belo for an undisclosed amount. The Gleaner, daily circulation 11,000, would fit with Scripps' Evansville Courier & Press in nearby southwestern Indiana and would be Scripps' 21st daily paper.

Belo said earlier this year it planned to sell The Gleaner along with two other small papers as part of an effort to boost its stock price.
