As part of the growth, the company created the position of associate general counsel and named David M. Giles to the post. Giles, who is also a former journalist, will work on contract, litigation, labor and First Amendment matters for both the newspaper and broadcasting divisions.

"Dave Giles is no stranger to Scripps having served as outside counsel to the company for many years," said A.B. Cruz III, senior vice president and general counsel of Scripps, in a statement. "He brings critical legal skills and experience to this important position and will undoubtedly help us achieve our legal and business objectives."

Giles was previously an associate at Baker & Hostetler, where for 10 years he worked with Scripps' newspapers and TV stations as well as FOX Television and Granite Broadcasting Co.

Before attending law school at Washington and Lee School of Law, Giles worked as a reporter for The Philadelphia Inquirer and USA Today.
