By: E&P Staff The Newspaper Association of America announced Thursday that the strategic plan approved by its directors does not include collection and dissemination of newsprint consumption statistics, a function that will be taken over by another group.
The NAA said it will "refocus its priorities on growing audience and revenue and on new business models that integrate digital platforms." The Board also approved a 2009 budget that will cut membership dues by about 25%.
The actions follow staff reductions of about 40%, some of which are believed to have cut into what remained of the association's technology and production staff, which, along with marketing, hereafter will become part of the newly created Business Development Department under Senior Vice President Randy Bennett.
E.W. Scripps subsidiary Media Procurement Services has taken on responsibility for acquiring members' newsprint-use information and supplying newsprint statistics in monthly reports.
NAA said it has contracted to supply the database services to MPS and that it will continue to own the newsprint statistics database. It directed members' questions to MPS Vice President Carole Winchester, at 513-977-5135.
Last month, The Specifications for Newsprint Advertising Production (SNAP) Committee announced it would no longer use the Newspaper Association of America Web page or staff to support its document-distribution or SNAP Certificate efforts.
