Scripps Treasure Coast Taps Heidelberg

Posted
By: E&P Staff Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers will use one dual-delivery shaftless-drive Magnapak inserter and two NP200 press gripper conveyors from Heidelberg of Dover, N.H., at its production facility under construction in Port St. Lucie, Fla., where it will produce The Stuart News; The Port St. Lucie News; The Tribune, Ft. Pierce; and The Press Journal, Vero Beach (combined circulation of 99,800 daily, 120,000 Sunday).

Transition of full daily production to the new facility is expected in the fourth quarter of this year. Heidelberg is providing turnkey installation and training.

The Magnapak's dual-out configuration will permit fast production of daily products and the extra hopper capacity required for Sunday inserting, according to Treasure Coast Operations Director Michael O'Leary. He added that easy hopper set-up and ergonomic design facilitate training and operation.

Treasure Coast's Magnapak will be configured with two NP125 delivery gripper conveyors and 25 hoppers, with up to 24-into-1 capacity in single-delivery mode. Dual-delivery mode will be used to achieve high throughput by inserting two product streams simultaneously, each with up to 11-into-1 capacity. Zone-control will enable different publications to be inserted at the same time.

One NP200 conveyor will carry products from two press folders, the second will serve one folder, and both will automatically release waste and paster copies to a press waste conveyor provided by TMSI.

An Omnicon control package includes downstream functions for automatic key bundling and bundle labeling. Omnicon will interface with the plant's Burt supervisory control system for advanced zoning and reporting.
