SCS Ad System Installed for Afro-American Newspapers

By: E&P Staff The Afro-American Newspapers in Baltimore, the country's longest running, African-American, family-owned newspaper, installed an advertising system from Software Consulting Services, LLC, Nazareth, Pa.

The paper chose AdMAX for retail and classified advertising and accounting and Layout-8000 for retail ad dummying to help alleviate problems and bottlenecks in ad sales, order entry and accounting.

With the system's query and reporting facilities, Finance Director Jack Leister said in a statement, "our sales manager is now able to tell at any time what's on the books for future dates." The system also shrunk the task commissions reporting from a full day to about 10 minutes, he added.

Veronica Mike-Hall, order-entry and sales staff supervisor in financial services, said the system "made us more organized." With the old system, "we could not see who sold an ad, nor could we track revenue by salesperson," said Mike-Hall, who used AdMax for several years in a prior position at another newspaper.

Founded in 1892 when former slave John H. Murphy Sr. merged three church publications, the paper is now a 20,000-circulation weekly run by Publisher John J. Oliver Jr., a fourth-generation member of the Murphy family.
