SCS Posts Fall, Winter Sales

Posted
By: E&P Staff Software Consulting Services LLC, Nazareth, Pa., announced numeorus sales over the past six months.

Buying its AdMAX retail/classified advertising were Colorado's Loveland Daily Reporter-Herald and Longmont Daily Times-Call and New York's El Diario La Prensa; FotoWare image-management and archiving tools customers included the Chicago Tribune, amNewYork, Intelligencer Journal of Lancaster, Pa., Newsday of Melville, N.Y., The Washington Post, The Capital of Annapolis, Md., and The Wall Street Journal.

SCS/Track ad production and digital ad asset management was installed at El Diario La Prensa and three Ottaway Newspapers locations: The Record, Stockton, Calif., the Mail Tribune, Medford, Ore., and Seacoast Newspapers, Portsmouth, N.H.

Circulating from 31,000 to more than 38,000 copies, the Mail Tribune is Ottaway's fifth site running SCS/Track, which also was installed at The Daily Tidings, its smaller sister paper, in Ashland, Ore.

SCS/Track interfaces with both locations' Ottaway AS400-based business systems and with their distinct newsroom systems -- Ashland's Macintosh-based Baseview system and Medford's PC-based Cybergraphic System. For page and edition tracking, SCS/Track interfaces with Ashland's ALS layout system. Using edition design information from ALS, SCS/Track's rADar module presents up-to-date edition status, including completed ad images and color-coded status of ads in progress. For ad building, the papers use QuarkXPress; SCS/Track automatically creates, sizes and names new Quark ad files when a job is selected.

With different front ends and RIPs, the papers previously "had to manually transfer EPS and/or PDF ads over its network. Now, according to Mail Creative Services Manager Susie Wenaus, SCS/Track seamlessly automates the conversion. "SCS/Track . . . also made finding ads much faster and easier," Wenaus said. "We know at any given moment where an ad is in the production process."

Medford's purchase of SCS/Track included new terabyte-capacity servers, built for SCS by Cobalt Computers. With SCS/Track on the servers running Red Hat Linux, the Mail Tribune has 26 workstations running Windows 2000 in Medford and three Macintosh OS 9.2 workstations in Ashland.

For display ad dummying, SCS's Layout 8000 went into the Rochester (N.Y.) Democrat and Chronicle (with XML interface and SCS/LinX news pagination using QuarkXPress); The News Journal, Wilmington, Del.; The News-Messenger, Fremont, Ohio; The Ledger, Lakeland, Fla.; Quad City Times, Davenport, Iowa; Burlington County Times, Willingboro, N.J.; Chicago Tribune; The Columbian, Vancouver, Wash.; Flemington New Jersey Newspapers; Bee Group Newspapers, Buffalo, N.Y.; Hathaway Publishing, Somerset, Mass.; The Sun Herald, Biloxi, Miss.; Asbury Park Press, Neptune, N.J.; Standard-Examiner, Ogden, Utah (with InLay news pagination using Adobe InDesign); The Ottawa (Ontario) Citizen; Le Nouvelliste, Trois-Rivieres, Quebec (with InLay); Folha de Sao Paulo, Brazil; and Diario de Yucatan, Merida, Mexico,

SCS/ClassPag classified pagination was purchased by New York's Daily News; The News & Observer, Raleigh, N.C.; The San Diego Union-Tribune; and Central Maine Newspapers, Augusta. Another sale is pending at the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel.
