By: E&P Staff Beverly Kees, the newspaper editor and educator struck and killed by truck in San Francisco Dec. 10, has been memorialized with a fund for journalism programs.

At her family's request, Sigma Delta Chi Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Society of Professional Journalistsm, has established the Beverly Kees Fund for Journalism to "support the kind of journalism programs that Bev cared so deeply about," said Peter Y. Sussman of SPJ's Northern California chapter.

Donations can be sent to Sigma Delta Chi Foundation, 3909 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis, Ind., 46208-4011. Checks should be made out to "Sigma Delta Chi" and indicate the Beverley Kees fund on the memo line, Sussman said.

Kees served as executive editor for several newspapers, including the Grand Forks (N.D.) Herald; the Post-Tribune in Gary, Ind., and The Fresno (Calif.) Bee. She was a former program director for the Freedom Forum and a president of the SPJ Northern California chapter.

A memorial for Kees will be held in San Francisco this Friday, Dec. 17, from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Shanghai 1930. Described as her favorite restaurant, it is located at 133 Steuart Street between Howard and Mission, near the Embarcadero. Those planning to attend are asked to call 415-475-5000, or e-mail irene@citiland.com.

An online memorial is posted here.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story suggested that SPJ has initiated the memorial fund. In fact, it was requested by Kees' family, and it will be administered by the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation with the family's guidance.
