By: E&P Staff Seacoast Newspapers Inc. completed installation of the SCS/Track ad production and digital ad asset-management system from Software Consulting Services of Nazareth, Pa. Seacoast, which serves the New Hampshire and Maine seaboard with the daily Portsmouth (N.H.) Herald and six weeklies, is among several Ottaway Newspapers properties running SCS/Track.
Seacoast's configuration supports multi-site and multi-publication sales, ad production and publishing. Seacoast's Ottaway AS400 ad order entry system requires a separate order for each publication, which results in multiple ad numbers for the same ad image. With SCS/Track, Seacoast can treat those orders as one ad for production, then automatically generate EPS files for each publication's ad order and send each file to the proper location for printing.
Beyond increasing revenue opportunities and minimizing production errors, SCS/Track supports multi-site ad building between Seacoast's Portsmouth headquarters and its remote site in Kennebunk, Maine. SCS implemented distributed peer-to-peer architecture for the sites. When an ad builder at one site goes to work on an ad, that site's SCS/Track server automatically checks the other site's server to confirm that the most recent version of the ad is accessed.
To run SCS/Track, Seacoast bought from SCS a pair of Cobalt Computers' terabyte-capacity servers running Red Hat Linux. Portsmouth has 10 Windows 2000-bsed SCS/Track workstations; Kennebunk has a remote departmental server and six workstations.
The SCS/Track system is integrated with Ottaway's AS400 front end and with the Herald's Dewarview news pagination system, Managing Editor ALS for dummying and Atex Enterprise for classified pagination. SCS/Track's rADar edition-management module uses ALS layout data to show page and edition status, including images of completed ads.
Seacoast creates ads in QuarkXPress, and SCS/Track automatically launches a selected ad job in XPress, creating the ad document in the ordered size and naming it appropriately. SCS/Track also automates workflow, preflighting and archiving.
