'Seattle P-I' Triples Final Single-Copy Press Run

Posted
By: Joe Strupp The Seattle Post-Intelligencer tripled its single-copy press run today, anticipating increased demand for the final print edition of the paper.

The P-I, which usually runs about 20,000 copies for non-subscriber sales, boosted that to 60,000 today, according to Jill Mackie, vice president/public affairs for The Seattle Times Company, which oversees circulation for both the P-I and The Seattle Times through the joint operating agreement.

"The demand is high," Mackie said today, but had no information on how many more copies had sold. "That is the report we have; we would not be surprised to sell out."

The press run boost follows Monday's announcement that the P-I would cease print publication and concentrate solely on its Web site.

Asked if a second press run could occur, Mackie did not believe so. She also said that all P-I subscribers would automatically begin receiving the Times on Wednesday, a move similar to that of The Denver Post, which switched all Rocky Mountain News subscribers to its paper after that daily closed on Feb. 27.

"There are people who value a daily paper and we hope they will give The Seattle Times a chance to meet their news and information needs," Mackie said. "The feedback we have been getting is that many subscribers have been concerned about receiving a daily print product."

Under the JOA, both newspapers published Monday through Saturday, with the Times the lone Sunday paper. All seven-day P-I subscribers have already been receiving the Times on Sunday, Mackie said.

"We know we have to win them over," she said of the former P-I subscribers.
