By: Staff Reports News, Circulation, Advertising Staffers Walk
Talking turkey in advance of the historically profitable Thanksgiving publishing week didn't pay off at The Seattle Times and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer (P-I) as about 1,000 news, circulation, and advertising staffers went on strike at 2 a.m. Tuesday.
Following a membership vote against a proposal to postpone its walkout for 48 hours, the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild's leadership called the strike of the two morning dailies, primarily over the issue of pay. Run under a joint operating agreement, the Times hasn't had a walkout since 1953, the P-I since 1936.
Seattle Times Co. President and Chief Operating Officer H. Mason Sizemore said at a news conference Monday night that both papers will continue to publish, using managers and replacement workers brought in from undisclosed newspapers in other cities, the Times reported today.
One of the arrows in the Guild's quiver as it carries out its campaign for a contract is a newly created online newspaper, the Seattle Union Record (http://www.unionrecord.com) - even though the union claims thereon that "our intent is not to promote the agenda of the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild." The union plans a print edition within a week.
