'Seattle Times' Helping Online-Only 'P-I' Get Rolling

Posted
By: E&P Staff For the next month, The Seattle Times Co. is helping the parent of the folded Seattle Times Post-Intelligencer transition to the online-only seattlepi.com.

Under terms of a document terminating their joint operating agreement (JOA), obtained Thursday by Washington state's attorney general, the Times Co. agrees to provide unspecified "consulting and transition services" to P-I parent Hearst Corp. for the first 30 days of the online-only paper. Seattlepi.com launched Wednesday, one day after the final print edition of the P-I was published.

Both corporations also agreed not to sue each other over any issue that might arise from the JOA, according to the document. The agreement, effective last Tuesday, was first reported by Seattle Times business reporter Eric Pryne.

The agreement also makes it clear that no more cash will trade hands between the former JOA partners. Under the JOA, which had an expiration date of 2083, the Times Co. kept 60% of revenue remaining after expenses for all non-newsroom expenses.

The Times article Friday noted that while the agreement does not specify what services the Times Co. might provide, its paper had run the business operations of the P-I Web site under the JOA.
