Seattle Times publisher Frank Blethen has been named Editor and Publisher’s 2020 Publisher of the Year. The announcement was made by E&P publisher Mike Blinder Oct. 7 during America’s Newspapers PIVOT 2020 virtual conference.

Blethen, 75, has been publisher since 1985. He is a fourth-generation member of the Blethen family, which founded the Times in 1896. In his nomination, Blethen was recognized for his longtime efforts to stop the defunding of newsrooms, expanding newsroom jobs, preventing more news deserts and incentivizing community ownership of newspapers. In 2019, Frank launched the Save the Free Press Initiative and continues to be an advocate by working with other news publishers to ensure the Local Journalism Sustainability Act passes.

Blethen was selected from more than 60 nominees this year. He will be profiled in the November issue of E&P.
