By: Mark Fitzgerald This week was eventful for reporters Duff Wilson and David Heath. Their
Seattle Times series about experimental cancer treatments at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center was reported as a Pulitzer Prize finalist on Monday, condemned as "fundamentally false" in a
Wall Street Journal opinion piece on Tuesday, and awarded the Heywood Broun prize from The Newspaper Guild on Wednesday.
The Guild applauded the series for having "survived numerous challenges before seeing print, including a 49-day strike at
The Seattle Times." In the
Journal column, Assistant Managing Editor Laura Landro, who was treated for cancer at the center, wrote that the articles conveyed "biased and misleading information."
