Second Editor Leaves Stockton, Calif., Paper This Year

By: Joe Strupp For the second time this year, The Record of Stockton, Calif. has seen its editor leave the newspaper. Will F.Corbin, who became editor on March 8, gave up the job Thursday, the paper reported. Corbin's sudden resignation followed criticism he had received for allowing the Port of Stockton director to review a story last month before it ran.

Corbin's departure comes only seven months after former editor James E. Gold left the same job on Jan. 7. As he did in January, Record President and Publisher Roger W. Coover named Managing Editor Mike Klocke to temporarily run the newsroom until a replacement is found.

"Will Corbin, our editor for the past five months, and I have decided that it is in the best interest of The Record to seek other leadership for our newsroom," Coover said in Friday's edition. "Will came to us with a wealth of experience and contributed to some positive changes in the newsroom. I wish him well."

"I have great faith in The Record's news staff to move forward in our coverage of the communities we serve. We have many challenges ahead of us," Klocke said Thursday.

Corbin is an experienced newsman who, before his tenure at The Record, most recently served two Knight Foundation fellowships advising newspapers in the former Soviet-bloc countries of Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, the paper reported.

The Record's circulation is 62,139 daily and 71,715 Sunday, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations FAS-FAX report for the six months ending March 31.
