S.F. Bay Area Press Photographers Association Bestows Awards in Annual Competition

By: The San Francisco Bay Area Press Photographers Association presented awards Sunday to the winners of its 36th Annual Newspaper and Television News Photography Competition.

About 120 news photographers and photojournalism students in the greater Bay Area from every major newspaper, wire service and television station entered the competition for their photography in 2009.

The winners are as follows:

Newspaper Photographer of the Year: Chris Jordan, (Fairfield) Daily Republic.

Television Photographer of the Year: Anne Onate, KTVU.

Student Photographer of the Year: Adam Lau, San Francisco State University.

Newspaper Spot News Photography: Clifford Oto, The (Stockton) Record, "Rooftop Arrest".

Newspaper General News Photography: Patrick Tehan, San Jose Mercury News, "Failing Prison System".

Newspaper Features Photography: Chris Kaufman, (Marysville) Appeal-Democrat, "BMX Riders".

Newspaper Sports Action Photography: Scott MacDonald, The Salinas Californian, "Tie-Down Roping".

Newspaper Sports Feature Photography: Jose Luis Villegas, The Sacramento Bee, "Joy at the Buzzer".

Newspaper Portrait/Personality Photography: Chris Kaufman, (Marysville) Appeal-Democrat, "Sea of Crosses".

Newspaper News Picture Story: Renee C. Byer, The Sacramento Bee, "California Economy Crisis".

Newspaper Feature Picture Story: Ariel Zambelich, freelance, "I?ll Be A Beautiful Girl".
