The Minnesota Star Tribune today announced the addition of Shane Guiter as vice president of philanthropy to help lead the company’s new ambitious community-driven philanthropic effort, the Minnesota Star Tribune Local News Fund. Guiter joins the media organization after spending the past eight years at Public Works, a consultancy which helps NPR and PBS stations develop new revenue strategies and business models in the face of media disruption and the shift to on-demand content.
“I cannot think of a more important mission right now than building a sustainable future for local news, and I am honored and inspired to help build philanthropic support for journalism at the Minnesota Star Tribune,” said Guiter.
Previous to Public Works, Guiter was VP of Development Strategies at PBS where he was a part of the leadership team that created Passport, a revenue streaming platform that has generated millions of financial contributors to the network. Prior to that, he was the chief operating officer for Kansas City PBS. During his tenure there, he helped secure a $5 million grant to launch a new hyperlocal journalism center, launched the independent music station The Bridge and built the station’s first digital product team.
“Shane brings with him significant expertise in developing new philanthropic revenue streams that will help us generate critical additional financial support,” said Paul Kasbohm, executive vice president and chief revenue officer of the Minnesota Star Tribune. “We’re thrilled to welcome him to the Minnesota Star Tribune as we continue to build out our sustainable growth model for local news.”
Before working in public media, Guiter held several influential roles in off-Broadway theater, serving as head of marketing for the Vineyard Theatre in New York, and head of membership and individual giving for the prestigious New York Theater Workshop. He and his wife Andi McDaniel have two young sons and are excited to return to the Twin Cities.
