By: E&P Staff Shaw Newspapers is reorganizing its suburban Chicago operations in a new company that will be composed of four segments operating its dailies, weeklies, niche products and new media offerings, the family-owned chain announced Tuesday.
Dixon, Ill.-based Shaw said the new entity, NorthWest News Group, will be led by Group Publisher John Rung, and headquartered in Crystal Lake, the far northwestern Chicago suburb where it publishes the Northwest Herald.
"We are organizing our company in a manner to ensure we place the proper focus on each operation, while integrating our aggregate resources as a whole," Rung said in a prepared statement.
Under the new group's umbrella will be two daily newspapers, the Northwest Herald, and the Kane County Chronicle in Geneva, Ill., which have a combined circulation of 51,178. Another segment will operate the five Weekly Journal papers. The monthly Business Journal is the initial publication of the niche product line.
Among the Web sites in the new media segment are
nwherald.com;
mchenrycountysports.com; one of the premier prep sports Web sites in the country;
kcchronicle.com; and
biz-journal.com.
The reorganization underlines the chain's commitment to the suburban Chicagoland market, Rung said.
"The realignment of our company reflects our strategy to produce the best community-focused publications in the west and northwest suburbs," he said. "This is best accomplished through the integration of all of our company's resources."
Shaw also publishes two dailies in Iowa.
