SHNS 'Saving Babies' Report Inspires Congressman to Take Action

Posted
By: E&P Staff In response to a seven-month investigation by Scripps Howard News Service (SHNS), Rep. Frank Pallone (D-N.J.) is asking the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to make recommendations on how the U.S. can improve its handling of sudden and mysterious infant deaths.

Pallone chairs the House Emergency and Commerce Subcommittee on Health.

The SHNS report -- titled "Saving Babies: Exposing Sudden Infant Death in America" -- was released starting last month. The latest installment, which came out this week, documents alarming trends in infant homicides.

Headed by reporters Thomas Hargrove and Lee Bowman, the SHNS project detailed the chaos surrounding how coroners and medical examiners in the U.S. investigate and diagnose thousands of infants who die mysteriously each year.

SHNS created a Web site to accompany the report. The site includes records of 20,000 infants who died from the beginning of 2000 through the end of 2004, as well as other material.

The United Media-marketed SHNS distributes content to more than 400 newspapers and Web sites.
