By: Dave Astor King Features Syndicate will distribute the "Shoe" comic strip starting Sept. 1.
Last fall, "Shoe" co-cartoonist Susie MacNelly's Blue Salvage Company filed suit against Tribune Media Services, charging that TMS was making it difficult for the comic to possibly move to King.
MacNelly, when reached on the phone today by E&P, declined to comment about the move to King or about how the lawsuit may have been resolved.
"Shoe" entered syndication with TMS in 1977. It appeared in more than 1,000 newspapers at its peak, and now runs in more than 500.
The comic was created by editorial cartooning legend Jeff MacNelly, a three-time Pulitzer Prize winner who died in 2000. He spent much of his career at the Chicago Tribune, a sister entity to TMS.
"Shoe" is now done by Susie MacNelly (Jeff's widow), Chris Cassatt, and Gary Brookins. All three had helped with the strip while Jeff was still alive.
King Comics Editor Brendan Burford said the syndicate is "delighted" to be distributing "Shoe," whose bird characters include newspaper journalists.
