Shreveport 'Times' Installs ProImage NewsWay Software

By: E&P Staff The Times, Shreveport, La., has implemented NewsWay workflow production software from ProImage America, Princeton, N.J.

Being installed two phases, NewsWay initially connects to the Gannett paper's existing RIPs and 3850 filmsetters. But because NewsWay is independent of the back end, it will drive any computer-to-plate devices that may be installed.

"ProImage's NewsWay system sits in the middle of all our front-end and back-end equipment to make one cohesive production system that manages and tracks pages and plates through the entire production process," Andrew Swanton, Times Projects Manager Andrew Swanton said in a statement. "It allows us to monitor production from anywhere, and now automates many tasks that previously needed manual intervention."

In the second phase, to be completed later this year, the system will communicate directly with ABB's MPS system on the Wifag press to be installed later in 2010, allowing the Times to fully automate edition planning, as NewsWay reads directly into the MPS database to extract the required information, such as plate cylinder location, which can be automatically burned on the edge of each plate to ensure it is hung correctly on the press. NewsWay also will calculate ink preset values and pass the data to the ABB press control.

Other NewsWay features used by The Times to boost efficiency include load balancing of RIPs and output devices, automated imposition, soft proofing and plate approvals. Further benefits come from automatically routing pages to additional destinations, such as e-tearsheets, archiving, and e-editions.
