By: Joe Strupp Two weeks after the Staten Island (N.Y.) Advance dropped its TV Book, prompting some 4,000 complaints, the weekly tab returned on Sunday, according to Editor Brian Laline.
But the publication has shrunk from 24 pages of TV listings and articles to 12 pages that include only listings. "We eliminated the content, it is just the grids," Laline said. "We retained the ads and moved them."
When the paper first removed the TV Book from its Sunday edition on Oct. 5, some 1,500 complaints came in over several days. Editors soon decided to revive the popular publication, printing a Page One note to readers on Oct. 12 that the book would return the following week.
Still, on Oct. 12, the paper received more than 400 complaints, Laline said. He estimates some 4,000 complaining calls, e-mails and letters have come in since the book was first removed.
When the slimmed-down version returned last Sunday, he said the paper actually got 35-40 calls thanking editors.
"It is good to know that people care about it that much," he said.
