Sizable Ink Savings in Miami with ProImage Software

Posted
By: E&P Staff New ProImage in Princeton, N.J., has announced that the Miami Herald has implemented and begun benefiting from ProImage OnColor ECO ink-optimization software.

As it saved the cost of the software in less than three months, the Herald expects significant annual savings, according to Prepress and Printing Operations Director Michael Christopher.

"The major benefits are reduced ink expense as well as improved quality - and performance has well exceeded our expectations," Christopher said in a statement. Also pointing to "significantly less ink rub-off and set-off," Christopher said, "the lack of second fold roller marks, and the elimination of almost all offsetting from page-to-page is also very noticeable."

Christopher further noted that OnColor ECO maintains plate furniture and graybars intact without RIP intervention or scripting, and that its implementation also saved time by decreasing sharpening needed in Adobe Photoshop.

The Herald evaluated several vendors' ink-optimization solutions before selecting OnColor ECO owing to ease of integration into its workflow (including the reporting wizard and error notification), a user-friendly interface, and simple installation. OnColor ECO also exploits existing resources such as RIPs and Distiller servers, making it more stable, according Christopher.

Ink consumption measured over four weeks showed 25-39% reduction in color inks and a 23% increase in black ink, yielding savings of as much as 25% of total ink cost.
