By: (AP) Alison Smale, deputy foreign editor of
The New York Times, was named managing editor of the
International Herald Tribune on Thursday.
Smale, 48, will begin her new job Jan. 19. She will report to Walter Wells, the former managing editor who has been named executive editor at the Paris-based newspaper.
Smale will organize the daily news report, plan coverage and plot future development of the
IHT, which is owned by The New York Times Co.
She became deputy foreign editor of the
Times in 2002 after serving as the newspaper's weekend foreign editor and day editor. She joined the
Times in 1998 after working for The Associated Press as bureau chief for most of Eastern Europe.
Times Executive Editor Bill Keller called Smale "a pillar of the foreign desk for the past five years" who demonstrated "expert news judgment." Smale's replacement at the
Times has not been announced.
Wells, 59, was named managing editor of the
IHT in 2002. His promotion to executive editor also takes effect Jan. 19.
