Smith, Former 'P-I' Sports Scribe, Dies

By: (AP) Boyd Smith, a Seattle Post-Intelligencer sports writer whose college basketball coverage earned him a national award, died at 89.

Smith died Friday after a stroke in San Jose, Calif.

He retired in 1980 after a 49-year career in which he also served for a time as president of the paper's newspaper guild local.

Smith covered Seattle University, which fielded national contenders at a time when the city had no big-league professional teams.

In 1958, when future NBA star Elgin Baylor led the Chieftains to the NCAA title game, Smith won the nation's top college sports writing award, presented by Notre Dame.
