By: E&P Staff James Smith has been named executive editor of The Bristol Press and The Herald in New Britain, Conn.
Most recently Smith served as editor of the Connecticut Post, and before that he spent 14 years as executive editor at the Record-Journal of Meriden. He has also served as managing editor of The News-Times in Danbury.
Smith has served as a Pulitzer Prize juror and received the Distinguished Writing Award from the American Society of Newspaper Editors. In addition, he is a two-time winner of the First Amendment Award from the Connecticut chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and received the Yankee Quill Award for lifetime contributions to New England journalism.
A member of the executive committee of the Connecticut Council on Freedom of Information, Smith served as city editor and sports editor at The Hartford Courant from 1979 to 1984, and also held managing editor positions at The Day of New London and The Register-Citizen of Torrington.
