'Smokeout' Publisher Smith Dead at 84

Lynn R. Smith, former publisher of the weekly Monticello (Minn.) Times, died July 14 at the age of 84, his son Donald Smith told the Associated Press. Smith suffered a stroke six years ago.

By starting Monticello's Don't Smoke Day, in January 1974, Smith is credited with originating what became the annual November Great American Smokeout.
