By: E&P Staff Rodney A. Smolla, the oft-quoted media law expert and dean of the University of Richmond law school, has been nominated to replace C. Boyden Gray on the Media General Inc. board of directors, the Richmond-based company announced.
Gray, who served as White House counsel under President George H.W. Bush, resigned the board because he has been appointed ambassador to the European Union. Gray, 63, had been a Media General director since 2003.
Smolla's nomination will be voted on at the annual shareholders meeting on April 27.
"We look forward to Rod Smolla's joining the board in April," Media General Chairman J. Stewart Bryan III said in a statement. "The Board will benefit from his very full experience in the field of First Amendment law as well as his experience as a media contributor and commentator. Additionally, he resides in Richmond, home of our corporate headquarters and second largest market, and is active in its civic and community affairs.
Mr. Smolla, 52, has since 2003 been the dean of the University of Richmond law school, where he's been a professor since 1998.
Media General directors standing for re-election for one-year terms are. J. Stewart Bryan III, O. Reid Ashe, Jr., Diana F. Cantor, Charles A. Davis, Marshall N. Morton, Thompson L. Rankin, Walter E. Williams and Coleman Wortham III, the company said.
Media General's newspaper properties include the flagship Richmond Times-Dispatch and The Tampa Tribune plus 22 daily community newspapers in the southeastern U.S. and more than 100 weeklies and specialty publications. It also owns 26 network-affiliated television stations.
