By: E&P Staff Soccer star Ronaldinho Gaucho, Brazilian cartoonist Mauricio de Sousa, and Universal Press Syndicate have teamed up on a new children's comic titled "Ronaldinho Gaucho."
The strip, which enters worldwide syndication this coming Monday, is based on the childhood of Ronaldinho -- named the best soccer player in the world by international soccer's governing body in 2004 and 2005. "Ronaldinho Gaucho" has already been picked up by newspapers in the Netherlands, London, Japan, Singapore, Colombia, Ecuador, and Honduras.
Kerry Slagle -- president of Atlantic Syndication, the international division of Universal -- said: "It's an ideal time for newspapers to be introducing this strip, what with the World Cup coming up and Ronaldinho Gaucho leading Barcelona to victory against Arsenal in the European Champions League finals this past week."
The daily and Sunday comic's characters include Ronaldinho's brother, sister, mother, his number-one fan Diego, and two dogs named Champ and Fireball.
De Sousa, winner of the Yellow Kid Award for cartooning, has a studio in Brazil that employs more than 150 artists. It produces newspaper strips, comic books, activity books, story books, animation, and other work.
