Some 270,000 Extra 'Rocky' Copies Printing Today -- Subscribers Will Get 'Post' Tomorrow

By: Joe Strupp An extra 127,000 copies of the Rocky Mountain News were printed today in anticipation of increased demand for the last edition of the closing paper. With retail outlets already running out, another 100,000 copies are expected to be printed later today to fill the need, according to the Denver Newspaper Agency.

On a normal Friday, only about 20,000 copies are printed for single-copy sales, said DNA spokesman Jim Nolan. He added that the final edition will be available through the weekend.

"The Rocky is a much-beloved institution in Denver, we fully expected people would want it," Nolan said. "We have been getting reports that it is selling out across the board."

In a related move, Nolan said the DNA, which has handled circulation for both The Rocky and the JOA partner Denver Post, will automatically switch Rocky subscribers to the Post. Any subscriber who does not want to receive the Post will have to cancel.

"We have publicized it, we sent out robo-E-mails to 60,000 subscribers with a message to ease people through the transition," Nolan said. "If you are a Rocky subscriber, you will automatically get the Post starting Saturday."

Prior to the Rocky closing, the JOA arrangement had the Rocky publishing Monday through Saturday and the Post Sunday through Friday. All Rocky subscribers received the Post on Sunday.

With the Rocky shutdown, a Post Saturday edition will re-appear for the first time since the JOA began in 2001.

Nolan said the choice was made to have Rocky subscribers automatically begin getting the Post under the assumption that most would want it. But he said people are being informed how to cancel if they wish.

"Our call volume is heavy as you might expect," Nolan said. "People are calling with lots of requests. I'm sure there have been some stops in our volume."

Nolan said any Rocky subscriber who has pre-paid will receive the Post at the same rate and can receive a refund if they wish not to receive the Post.
