Somerset, Pa., Paper Teams With 'Pittsburgh Trib' for Sunday Edition

By: The Daily American of Somerset will begin publishing a Sunday edition for the first time in its 86-year history on Dec. 31, publisher Andy Bruns announced Tuesday.

The newspaper, owned by Schurz Communications of South Bend, Ind., will produce the new edition in a partnership with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the largest of several papers owned by billionaire Richard Mellon Scaife, Bruns said.

The Sunday edition will include local news produced by the Daily American staff, wrapped around state and national news produced by the Tribune-Review, Bruns said.

"It rarely makes sense financially for newspaper markets of our size to have a seven-day newspaper," Bruns said. But Bruns felt it would be feasible if the Daily American partnered with a larger newspaper.

The Daily American has a paid circulation of about 14,000, according to the Schurz Web site. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and the sister publication, Tribune-Review of Greensburg, had a combined Sunday circulation of 158,000 as of October, according to the Tribune-Review.
