By: E&P Staff Call it a 21-year delivery experiment that failed: The Sonoma (Calif.) Index-Tribune is returning to the U.S. Postal Service for delivery of the twice-weekly paper.
In 1985, the Index-Tribune moved to carrier delivery after decades of relying on mail delivery.
But now, I-T Editor and Publisher Bill Lynch said in a recent note to readers, the paper has determined it makes more sense to go back to Post Office.
"For a number of reasons, including the high-cost of gasoline, we have determined that the United States Postal Service would be a better means of getting our newspaper to local subscribers," Lynch said.
Among the other reasons, he added, were environmental consideration. Better, he said, to put the papers in the mail than send out delivery vans that follow the same routes as postal workers.
The changeover to mail was effective with the Oct. 27 issue.
As part of the conversion, the I-T offered all subscribers a free one-year subscription to its e-edition, which is a complete online copy of the newspaper.
