By: E&P Staff Sony plans to introduce two new digital readers at the end of August while cutting the price of books offered through its e-store, The New York Times
reports.
The Reader Pocket Edition and the Reader Touch Edition will retail for $199 and $299, respectively.
Sony said it plans to focus on affordability. Amazon reduced the price of its Kindle to $299 and Sony's older e-reader models, the 505 and 700, go for $269 and $399, respectively.
The New York Times' Brad Stone and Motoko Rich report that the new Sony readers cannot access newspapers since it devices does not yet proper reading software. The devices do not have a wireless connection either. Sony said it was working on the developing both functions.
Nevertheless, Sony has been quietly approaching newspaper companies about potential partnerships.
