By: E&P Staff Washington State's biggest community newspaper publisher, Sound Publishing Inc., announced that on Jan. 2 it will temporarily close its Bainbridge Island plant, across the sound from Seattle. All printing will be handled by the company's Everett plant, which may absorb some workers from the Bainbridge Island facility, where delivery staging will continue.
The company now publishes fewer editions of some of its titles and has seen a reduction in commercial work. Though Sound Publishing remains "a strong and viable company," President Manfred Tempelmayr blamed a weak economy and newspaper industry difficulties for the action, which will affect 44 full- and part-time employees.
Sound Publishing produces 30 community newspapers, two monthly business journals, and 17 shoppers in Washington and Oregon, as well as a U.S. Navy publication.
In nearby Bremerton, The Kitsap Sun's Rachel Pritchett reported that all Sound Publishing papers will convert to tabloid format, and that Sound Publishing's Central Kitsap Reporter, Bremerton Patriot and North West Navigator will switch from Saturday to Friday publication.
