'South Bend Tribune' to Devote Three Pages to Year-End Cartoon Spread

Posted
By: Dave Astor As many newspapers shrink the space they devote to comics and editorial cartoons, the South Bend (Ind.) Tribune is bucking that trend.

On Sunday, Dec. 30, the paper will once again devote three full pages to its year-in-review cartoon spread. Other papers that do such spreads usually devote one or two pages to them.

"The first page will be a color front with some of my editorial cartoons from this past year," Tribune staff cartoonist Ron Rogers told E&P. "The following two full pages will have syndicated cartoons that the editorial page editor wasn't able to use during the year."

EPE Gayle Dantzler said during a phone interview this morning that the cartoon spread is "worth the space. It's sort of a gift to readers. People have told us they really like it."

She added that the Rogers page will include new art as well as some of his 2007 local and state cartoons, while the second and third pages will feature 36 national and international cartoons -- in chronological order -- by at least 10 syndicated creators.

To create room for the spread, the Tribune's Dec. 30 opinion/business section will have more pages than usual.
