By: E&P Staff Peggy Sanders, a writer and farm-ranch resident from Oral, S.D., finished first in the 2007 Will Rogers Writing Contest sponsored by the National Society of Newspaper Columnists.
Her winning essay, "Run Amuck Ranching," mocked "city folk" moving to the country.
The second-place winner was Randall Reeder of Hilliard, Ohio, who writes a column called "Will Rogers Today." His "Water's Risin'" entry was about flooding in normally dry Oklahoma.
And Pownal, Vt., author Andrew Dequasie finished third with "The Twenty Horse Race," which took the form of a letter from Rogers to Henry Ford.
The three writers will receive $200, $100, and $50, respectively. They were among the entrants from 18 states.
Coordinating the contest was columnist Robert L. Haught. The final judge was Steven K. Gragert, director of the Will Rogers Memorial Museums in Claremore, Okla.,and editor of several books on Rogers.
Rogers (1879-1935) was a stage, screen, and radio performer as well as a writer who penned many newspaper columns.
