The South Florida Sun-Sentinel is exploring options for a new headquarters, possibly in the suburbs.

The South Florida Business Journal reported late Oct. 7 that Sun-Sentinel personnel had visited some buildings and contacted prospective landlords. Jim Morris, engineering facilities manager at the paper's Deerfield Beach facility, told the Journal the project was being handled by parent Tribune Co., in Chicago.

Between workforce reductions and relocations to the Deerfield Beach building, where the paper is printed and packaged, the Sun-Sentinel requires less space for its headquarters. It also has closed satellite offices in recent years. The paper moved its headquarters to the current location about 20 years years ago, about the time when the Deerfield Beach plant went into operation.

The Sun-Sentinel's lease expires at the end of next year, according to the Journal, which said the 279,000-square-foot building has about 46,000 square feet available and is occupied also by Tribune television station WSFL.

The Journal suggested an alternative possibility to renegotiating with the current landlord for less space or relocating. Because Tribune remains in Chapter 11 protection, it could ask the bankruptcy court relief from its current lease obligations.
