By: A South Carolina newspaper is calling on Governor Mark Sanford to resign in the wake of his revelation that he had an extramarital affair.
The Spartanburg Herald-Journal published an editorial Thursday saying Sanford should step down.
The governor revealed in a Wednesday news conference that he'd been having an affair for about a year with a woman from Argentina.
"Mark Sanford cannot navigate a deep and painful personal crisis and lead the state through its economic crisis at the same time," the paper said.
"This kind of personal issue is consuming. It will be more than a distraction from his duties as governor, it will be a higher priority."
The editorial says the state needs a leader who can focus all of his or her attention on the economic problems.
Meanwhile, South Carolina Senate's top leader said calls for Sanford's resignation will mount if evidence emerges that he used state resources on his affair.
Senate President Pro Tem Glenn McConnell said Thursday the calls would only increase if it could be shown that Sanford deliberately tried to avoid transferring his authority while out of touch for four days.
Sanford spokesman Joel Sawyer said Wednesday he was not aware of any state funds being used in Sanford's pursuit of an affair in Argentina. He said no state resources were used for travel arrangements.
