By: Dave Astor An Indiana resident has won the "Speed Bump" caption contest, which drew about 4,000 entries.
The contest asked readers to fill in the caption of a cartoon with a police-lineup theme. In the lineup were an alien, a dog, a caveman, a modern-day man, and a clown. A woman looking at the lineup is saying something to a cop -- with contest entrants asked to fill in her empty dialogue balloon.
Pete Battistini of Avon, Ind., won by having the woman say: "Oh, that reminds me. I need to go vote today." The winning submission will run in newspaper comics pages on Aug. 21. Five honorable mentions will also appear in print that week.
"I'm sure some readers will accuse me of laziness by using up a whole week with other people's jokes, but it took me far, far longer to read those thousands of submissions than it would have for me to draw six cartoons myself," cartoonist Dave Coverly told E&P today. "It was tough work -- and those 'Speed Bump' readers turned out to be a witty bunch."
"Speed Bump" is distributed by Creators Syndicate.
