By: The Iowa State Daily has been named the nation's top college newspaper by the Society of Professional Journalists.
The newspaper received the award for college newspapers that publish at least four times a week. The award was announced Monday. It will be presented during SPJ's National Journalism Conference Sept. 5 in Atlanta.
The Daily was chosen from newspapers in 12 regions across the country. The Daily Utah Chronicle at the University of Utah and The State News at Michigan State University were finalists in the category.
Other winners from Michigan include:
-- In the feature writing category, Alex Stawinski from Central Michigan University was the national winner.
-- In the best all-around non-daily student newspaper category (published less than four times per week), Central Michigan Life at Central Michigan University was a finalist.
-- In the best student magazine category, EJ Magazine at Michigan State University was a finalist.
-- In the television in-depth reporting category, Ben Phillips, Karly Pence and Kevin Wilt at Michigan State University were finalists.
-- In the online in-depth reporting category, Andy Balaskovitz, John Allison and Ian Walker at Michigan State University were finalists.
